In a shocking turn of events, properties owned by Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in both Los Angeles and Miami were raided by US Homeland Security yesterday. This was reportedly part of a federal sex trafficking investigation, although authorities have not confirmed whether Combs himself is the focus of the probe.
A statement from Homeland Security Investigations provided limited information about the raids, stating that they were part of an ongoing investigation with assistance from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami, and local law enforcement partners. Sources speaking to NBC News revealed that federal officers in New York have already interviewed three women and a man, with three more interviews scheduled. The investigation revolves around allegations of sex trafficking, sexual assault, as well as the solicitation and distribution of illegal narcotics and firearms.
Although Combs was not present at any of the properties during the raids, reports suggest that his sons were among those being questioned at his LA home. There was speculation that Combs had fled on a private jet to the Caribbean before the raids, but it was later revealed that he was not on that specific flight. He was seen at a Miami airport waiting for another private jet to fly to the Bahamas. Homeland Security managed to track him down at the airport, questioning members of his entourage and seizing some phones. However, Combs himself was not arrested or taken into custody.
These raids come amidst a slew of lawsuits filed against Combs and his associates, accusing them of sexual harassment and assault. Many of these lawsuits were filed under the New York Adult Survivors Act, which allows new litigation for claims that would typically be barred by the statute of limitations under New York law. The most high-profile of these lawsuits was filed by his former partner Cassie Ventura, which was quickly settled.
Recently, producer Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones Jr filed a lawsuit making various allegations against Combs stemming from their work on ‘The Love Album’. Universal Music, its CEO Lucian Grainge, and former Motown CEO Ethiopia Habtemariam were named as defendants in the lawsuit, although Habtemariam has since been removed. Jones claims that Universal sponsored events at Combs’ LA home where sex workers and underage girls were present and female guests’ drinks were allegedly drugged.
Actor Cuba Gooding Jr has been added as a defendant in Jones’ lawsuit, with allegations claiming that Combs tried to “groom and entice” him “to engage in homosexuality”. Jones also alleged that Gooding Jr attempted unsolicited groping, leading to a physical altercation.
In a new court filing, Jones accused Combs of harassing him and his family following the litigation. Jones claims that Combs fed false stories to TMZ and sent associates to harass his eight-year-old daughter, her mother, and his ex-spouses, leaving them in fear of potential harm. Combs has denied all allegations against him but has yet to comment on the criminal investigation.
A legal representative for Jones issued a statement to Rolling Stone expressing relief about the raids, calling it a long-awaited form of justice. Another lawyer representing Ventura stated support for law enforcement in prosecuting those who have violated the law, hoping that this process would hold Combs accountable for his actions.
